Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes this season’s Premier League title contenders will continue to drop points because they are no longer able to overwhelm the also-rans.

With almost a third of the campaign gone there is a congested look to the top flight, with those challenging at the summit all having suffered surprise setbacks.

Wenger’s Arsenal have been no exception, with their latest shock result coming in Sunday’s 1-0 home defeat to promoted Newcastle.

And the Gunners boss reckons the current trend is down to a combination of the top clubs playing extra games in Europe and the so-called lesser clubs learning to maintain a high intensity for 90 minutes. Read more of this post

However, Shakhtar – thrashed 5-1 at the Emirates Stadium a fortnight ago – continued to press and were eventually rewarded when 19-year-old Craig Eastmond, making his European debut, diverted Dmytro Chygrynskiy’s header into his own net.

Eduardo then slotted home from close range on the stroke of half-time to force his old club to wait for qualification to the knockout stages.

Chelsea qualified for the last 16 after a second-half demolition of Spartak Moscow at Stamford Bridge resulted in a 4-1 victory. After a lacklustre opening half, Chelsea made it four straight wins in Group F. Read more of this post
